Morning Schedule
8:30: Arrival: Children play outside until 8:55 as weather permits
9:00: Snack: Families provide their children a nutritious snack each day. Snack is a time
when children and teachers sit down together to share conversation and ask
children their thoughts and ideas about questions posed to them.
9:20: Good morning circle: We always begin circle with our good morning song and
introduce the parent and child of the day. The art activity of the day is presented,
as well as new activities in the learning centers, offering the children opportunities to ask
questions about them.
9:30: Small group divisions: The children are divided into 2 or 3 groups based on their
developmental ability to succeed at the activity presented. These activities vary from
simply learning how to play in a particular area or at an activity presented in the
classroom, to extending the level of interest in a particular topic or area of the
curriculum into a classroom project. Frequently, these group activities serve as
opportunities for teachers to document learning for children’s work samples in their
individual portfolios.
9:45: Art: A new art activity is presented each day where the children have an opportunity to
explore the materials creatively and expressively within their own investments of time
and interest.
10:00: Free Play: Children are free to move throughout the classroom making choices and
managing their time at the learning centers and activities in which they wish to
participate. Small groups of children may chose to participate in a
classroom project or to take part in a small group activity led by a teacher.
10:45: Clean-up: Children and teachers work together to put away the toys and materials in the classroom
11:00: Music and Mystery Bag: Each week we introduce at least one new song. The children
enjoy making selections from our musical repertoire list. Most of our music is interactive
using props, active movement and multiple children. The mystery bag activity involves
the child-of-the-day placing something from home inside the ? bag, giving clues, and
then responding to guesses and questions asked.
11:15: Outside Play: The children play outside year round unless there is inclement weather
or unsafe conditions in the yard (ice, wind chill, wind advisory, etc.). If this is the
case, we use the upstairs playroom.
11:45: Story: We return inside and divide into two groups for a story
11:55: Lunch: Once again, a teacher eats with the group of children at each table,
encouraging independence and engaging all in conversation.
12:20: Ball Play on Playground: As each child finishes eating, he packs away any uneaten
food and returns back outside to play until dismissal. In winter or inclement weather,
children look at books and then return to the circle room to chat, sing and have closure
to the morning.
